Thanks for your comment; yes it is a real environmental disaster that the Macal, especially the upper drainages drowned by the reservoir, is no longer a wild, free flowing river. But it is almost impossible to stop such projects in 3rd World countries where the public welfare is at stake. The current issue in Belize concerns the development of its newly discovered oil resources, and permits have been given for offshore drilling exploration that could drastically affect the reef ecosystem.

The upper Macal must have been spectacular and I am sad to hear it is no longer. I encourage anyone to read "Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw" by Bruce Barcott for a wonderful taste of Belize. Among the many colorful stories of the people, animals, and landscape of the country is the story of the Chalillo dam on the Macal.
