We started our Belize Adventure Week itinerary way back in 1994. Back then we had just leased Northeast Caye at Glover’s Reef, this is the island next door to the one we later bought, Long Caye.
Up until adding the Belize Adventure Week itinerary, we only had one package. It was called “Sea Kayak Glover’s Reef”. We didn’t have near as many sports on the island as we do today; we sea kayaked and snorkeled, and we had one windsurf board and sail. There was no half week option, you could only go for the full week, and our boat went out of Dangriga and took 5 hours!
So my partner Cully had this great idea to do a package called Belize Adventure Week, which would be 1/2 island sports and 1/2 jungle sports. Everyone does this now, but we were the first to offer a trip like this. Originally the inland sports were whitewater rafting on the Macal (which was later dammed, and became unrunnable), mountain biking in the jungle, caving to Footprint Cave, and running the Caves Branch River underground.
Because of various circumstances like the Macal being dammed up, we have changed the inland offerings over the years, and only the underground river run has remained a part of the itinerary all of these years. Our new Belize Adventure Week itinerary has the biggest change we have made in a long time, we have added TWO new sports to the roster, waterfall rappelling and ziplining!
The way this came about is that late last season I received a call from the owner of a zipline and waterfall rappelling company in southern Belize called Mama Noots Bocawina Adventures. We get a lot of requests for ziplining, and this got me interested. This past April myself and our lead Belize Adventure Week guide, Neri Chi, drove to Mama Noots Eco-Resort near Dangriga where we stayed for 4 days to try their activities out firsthand.
What fun! The waterfall rappelling especially is incredible. You hike about 500 feet up a jungle trail, where you find the most refreshing pool waiting for you at the top. After all the jumping and swimming you can handle, you then rappel down the Antelope Falls! And it’s possible to do this hike/rappel and the zipline in the same day!! It was so exciting we decided right then and there to add these exhilarating adventures to our Belize Adventure Week trip, now in its 20th year.
