It’s been in the works for a long time, but finally on October 15 of this year Southwest Airlines will begin daily service to Belize! It’s been an even longer time since there have been any changes in the air service to Mexico’s next-door neighbor. For years we have had the same few options. This new choice in travel to Belize really mixes it up a little bit, and I am hopeful that with the increased competition maybe all of the Belize fares will go down!
Southwest does not operate in my area, so I was unfamiliar with their pricing. They have three different tiers of pricing, and the last tier is really great. When you buy your ticket you can go Business Select, Anytime, or Wanna Get Away. Up until now I have almost exclusively flown United Airlines to Belize, and they don’t offer this option. The Wanna Get Away fare is much lower than the other two, with the penalty of being non-refundable for any reason, although it is “reusable” – in other words, transferable to a different date, and you would only have to pay the price difference, not a change fee.
However, this more restricted cancellation policy should be no problem for our guests, because we highly recommend to all of our guests to purchase travel insurance, and most of them do. We recommend Travelex insurance, but you may, of course purchase a policy from many different providers. Here’s a link to their website: http://www.travelex-insurance.com/index.asp?location=44-0013&go=ltl or call Travelex here: 800-228-9792. Our location number is #44-0013.
The reason we recommend so strongly that our guests purchase trip insurance is because if you are late arriving for our trip, you will likely have to charter a boat out to the island, which would cost about $725 for the boat and $80 per person for a flight to fly to where you meet the boat, as well as additional funds for an extra motel room and meals. When you are late for a trip on a super remote island, the costs can really add up.
The trip insurance would cover the loss on the flight as long as you have a covered reason, and as long as you include the flight in the policy. US citizens can also buy a more expensive policy that allows you to cancel for any reason.
So because you will likely be purchasing trip insurance anyway, go ahead and buy the cheaper ticket on Southwest Air! The savings are astounding. For example, I checked the fares from Houston to Belize for our first trip of the season (November 27 – December 6). If you travel Business Select the fare is $927. If you travel Anytime the fare is $921. But if you manage to snag a fare at the Wanna Get Away rate you will pay only $357!!!! And not only that, you get two bags for free! These fares have the added benefit of getting Business class for only $50 more than the regular class, so you might as well go for it.
Right now you can book this flight to Belize (BZE) through Hobby Airport in Houston (HOU) for any date through March 8, 2016. You can check the rates on their website www.southwest.com, or give them a call at 800.435.9792 and choose the prompt for “International”.
